Biological Soil Health

  • A soil-first approach that feeds, amends and aerates the root zone
  • Core aerification—the primary tool for controlling compaction. Purpose-built equipment penetrates the soil, extracts plugs and opens channels through the root zone
  • Extracted cores may be reincorporated into the surface or removed according to field conditions and the maintenance objective
  • Condition-specific cultivation options including hollow- or solid-tine deep aerification, deep drilling, water injection, vertical mowing, spiking and slicing
  • Deep-tine and deep-drill work can reach compaction or layering below conventional coring depth, create channels for air, water and nutrients, and allow sand or organic amendments to be introduced where appropriate
  • Lower-disruption practices such as water injection, vertical mowing, spiking and slicing may support thatch control, rooting and recovery, but are selected to complement—not replace—traditional core aerification
  • Aerification timing and frequency matched to warm- or cool-season turf, active growth, soil profile, traffic intensity and overseeding plans so the grass can recover properly
  • Programs matched to field traffic and soil moisture to improve infiltration, internal drainage, rooting depth and turf recovery
  • Correction of compacted conditions that contribute to shallow roots, excessive thatch, runoff, prolonged wetness and field puddling
  • Natural organic fertilizers and biostimulants that support beneficial microbes and nutrient cycling
  • Granular, dry and liquid applications selected for the field's specific needs
  • Knowledgeable use of conventional fertility when warranted, with organic soil building as BSI's primary recommendation
  • Reduced dependence on synthetic inputs and reduced risk of unnecessary nutrient and phosphate runoff over time

Organic-first, IPM-informed management. BSI begins with soil health, monitoring, cultural practices and non-synthetic inputs. If a pest infestation threatens field survival, safety or playability, a targeted and legally permitted pesticide treatment may be necessary. After the infestation is controlled, BSI returns the field to its preventive, soil-first maintenance program.

Allowed products and application requirements vary by active ingredient and location. BSI reviews product labels and applicable federal, state and local rules, including California's Healthy Schools Act, before making recommendations for school and community fields.

  • Evaluation of the irrigation design itself, including sprinkler location, spacing, zones and system age

  • Nozzle review to match precipitation rates before unnecessary changes are made to watering time
  • Recommendations for redesign, separate zones or a dedicated irrigation system when field conditions require it
